Having a baby is an incredible time in your life, and it’s more important than ever to strengthen your relationship before you bring your newborn home. New dad holding his baby, a reminder to strengthen your relationship before baby arrives

A new baby changes everything, including your relationship. Sleep gets scarce, roles shift, and conversations that used to be easy can turn tense when you’re both exhausted. Research by Dr. John Gottman and colleagues found that relationship satisfaction often dips for couples after a first baby arrives, and that couples who invest in their friendship and conflict skills tend to weather that stretch better.

Over five 60-minute sessions, you and your partner will talk through the things expecting parents often don’t discuss until they’re in the thick of it. How will you split night feedings and household chores? What did each of you learn about parenting from your own family, and what do you want to do differently? How involved will the grandparents be? What happens to work, money and time together?

Alongside those conversations, we’ll build practical skills: how to bring up a frustration without starting a fight, how to ask for help before you’re at the end of your rope, and how to stay connected as a couple when a tiny person is running the schedule. The idea is for you to leave with tools that work at 3 a.m. as well as at the dinner table.

This package is a good fit for first-time parents, couples expecting another child, and couples planning to start a family soon. The earlier you start, the more time you’ll have to practice before baby arrives.

Good questions before you book

When should we start the Pre-Baby package?

Anytime during pregnancy works, but starting in the first or second trimester gives you room to practice before life gets hectic. If you’re planning to start a family soon, it’s a great step before pregnancy too.

Do we need to be having problems to sign up?

No. This package is designed for couples who are doing well and want to stay that way through a big life change.

Is pre-baby couples counseling in Omaha refundable?

No. Payment is due at the time of your first appointment and is non-refundable.

What if we want more support after the baby comes?

You can continue with Pay As You Go sessions. Moms of little ones may also enjoy The Mommy’s, my monthly Thursday-morning group for moms of kids under five.
