When One of You Is Leaning Out
It’s rare for two people to reach the brink at the same moment. More often, one partner has been unhappy for a long time, has tried to say so, and has slowly stopped hoping. The other is blindsided and now wants to fix everything at once.
Both positions make sense, and both deserve room. If you’re the one leaning out, I won’t try to talk you into anything. If you’re the one leaning in, I’ll help you stop the panicked moves (pleading, pushing, promising) that tend to push a reluctant partner further away.
Gottman research is often cited as finding that couples wait around six years after problems start before getting help. By then, hurt has piled up. That doesn’t make it hopeless. It does mean we need to be clear-eyed and focused.

What Last-Chance Marriage Counseling Looks Like
Last-chance counseling is more focused than general couples work. In the first sessions, we look honestly at what went wrong, what’s still there, and what each of you would need to see to believe things could be different.
From there, if you both decide to try, we go straight at the patterns doing the most damage. For many couples, that means cutting out contempt and criticism, breaking the cycle where one pursues and the other withdraws, and rebuilding a baseline of friendship and goodwill. Sometimes it means facing an affair, an addiction, or years of loneliness nobody talked about.
Couples with difficult, long-standing, complicated problems are a specialty of mine. I’m direct by nature, and couples at this stage usually appreciate that. You don’t have time to waste on a therapist who just nods.
“A marriage on the edge doesn’t need more pressure. It needs honesty, a plan, and two people willing to try one more time, the right way.”

Divorce Prevention in Omaha When You’ve Already Tried Counseling
If past counseling didn’t help, you’re in good company. Common reasons: the therapist didn’t do much couples work, sessions turned into weekly complaint hours, or nothing changed between appointments. In my office you’ll get active feedback, specific skills and between-session practice that’s realistic on a Tuesday night with kids in the house.
Clarity is a worthy goal too. Some couples work hard and decide to stay. Some decide, together, to part. Either way, making that decision with a steady head protects your kids, your finances and your own peace of mind far better than a decision made in the worst week of the year.

When Couples Counseling Isn’t the Right Fit
I’ll always be honest about this. If there is physical violence, threats, or one partner is afraid of the other, couples counseling isn’t the place to start. Individual support and safety planning come first. The National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) is available around the clock.
If an affair is still going on, we’ll need to deal with that directly before repair work can take hold. And if one of you has firmly decided to divorce, the focus can shift to ending things as respectfully as possible, especially when children are involved.
